Help Wanted!

(MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE NEAR THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE)

The most remarkable way to change your life is to volunteer your time to help others, whether it’s for the MRC or another organization in your community. Kirksville is home to a number of rewarding volunteer organizations, which include: the Adair County Red Cross, CERT (Community Emergency Response Team), and the Salvation Army.

In fact, Bottom Line’s Daily Health News reported that a British study discovered that British communities with high levels of volunteering activity experienced...

  • Improved educational performance. Students received higher standardized test grades.
  • Lower crime. There were fewer burglaries in communities of volunteers.
  • More satisfaction with their lives. Communities that volunteered reported greater life satisfaction and happiness.
  • Better health overall.

Interestingly, the study showed that the community benefits of volunteering were independent of wealth and social class. Observers reported that even a relatively poor community that volunteers can perform better in terms of health, life satisfaction, crime and education than a relatively affluent community that does not.

The Northeast Missouri MRC roster includes physicians, allied health professionals, EMTs, paramedics, nurses, mental health professionals, CERT team members, and pilots. If you have a medical background, including prior military experience, consider joining and using your experience to help others.

There are many benefits to joining the MRC: training, informational programs, networking with other professionals, and the satisfaction of volunteering your time to help others.

Membership in the Northeast Missouri MRC unit isn’t just for medical professionals: support staff members are absolutely critical during a disaster or public health emergency. Help will be needed with records management, organizational skills, logistics, transportation, and a multitude of other tasks if we are mobilized.

With members from Adair, Knox, Macon, Scotland, and Putnam counties, our membership is currently at about 85 volunteers. *Click here to see our organizational chart.

Members of our steering committee donate their time and expertise to guide the development and growth of the MRC. Committee members include:

  • Russ Baughman, Truman State University
  • Don Crosby, Adair Co. Ambulance District
  • Lana Dawkins, Northeast Missouri Area Health Education Center
  • Jerry Glassford, Adair Co. Health Dept.
  • Tom Johnson, Truman State University Dept. of Public Safety
  • Dr. Richard Mercer
  • Jason Snarr, Kirksville Fire Dept.
  • Lori Tonkinson, volunteer coordinator.
